EBC trek Day 01 – Kuala Lumpur KLIA to Kathmandu (1,334m/4,375ft)

2017 Everest Base Camp Trek
Walked in the Footsteps of Mountaineering Legends!

2017 Namaste! Everest Base Camp (EBC) 5,364m in the Himalayas welcome (L-R) Ching Neng Bin, Abdul Rashid, Simon Loh, Alan Koh, Prakash Kapri (guide), Ong Teik Hong, Randy Ngatimin and two porters infront; Binod and Rajendra.

After having trekked the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) four years ago in October 2013, it was my only dream left to trek the Everest Base Camp, which was considered one of the great treks of the world, and to walk in the footsteps of mountaineering legends - Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. My dream came true when I joined a six-member team from October 28th  to  November 11th, 2017.

Day 01 (28.10.17) – Kuala Lumpur KLIA fly 3,400km to Kathmandu (1,334m /4,375ft) by Malindo Air. (Flying time: 4hr 40min). Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, a representative of the trekking agent greeted us and took us to Hotel Thamel, located in the heart of Kathmandu, where we were able to find out about our EBC trek. Overnight at the Thamel Hotel.

Lukla to Everest Base Camp Trekking Route in Nepal.

The first three team members (L-R: Alan Koh 62, Ching Neng Bin 64, and Ong Teik Hong 58) met at KLIA1 before our departure for Kathmandu at 9.50am on Malindo Airways. The remaining three team members from Singapore (Abdul Rashid 29, Randy Ngatimin 29, and Simon Loh 30) flew in by MAS in the evening and be joining us later in Kathmandu.

SAT. 28 OCT MALINDO AIR: OD 0184 Duration: 4hrs 40mins
KUL - KTM KATHMANDU, NEPAL Aircraft: BOEING 737-800 JET
Departing At: 9:50am Arriving At: 12:15pm

The pilot's descent was very abrupt and frightening with the mountains in the background. On arrival, we applied for a 15-day visa for USD25 which took us at least 2 hours before we exit the arrival lounge.

Hotel Thamel is 15 mins drive from the airport and is within walking distance from most of the attractions like the monkey temple, Garden of Dreams, King Palace, and Durbar Square.

A beautiful sculpture is at the top of the Hotel Thamel's front door in Kathmandu City, Nepal.

1 USD for 102 Nepalis Rupees. Noticed the telephone wire, was just as messy as in Laos and Cambodia.

Nepali Kukri Knife was just what we were looking for around the knife shop and asked for prices.

The kukri or khukuri is a Nepalese knife with a curved blade, used as both a tool and a weapon in Nepal.

We had to arrange dinner ourselves. We walked around the Thamel area and ordered fried rice which was too big for each of us to finish. We retired early when we heard our Team B consisting of younger adults from Singapore only arrived at midnight while their plane was circling in the sky for their landing slot.

The 15-day ground trip in Nepal is USD1,050 per person, excluding flights from Kuala Lumpur to Kathmandu.

Cost Inclusive: all state and local taxes, all domestic airfares based on itinerary, Everest Base Camp trekking permit and time card, down jacket and seasonal sleeping bags, private vehicle airport transfers, 2-star accommodation in Kathmandu with breakfast, 1 English speaking guide and porter and their payments, Sagarmatha National Park entrance fee and necessary permits, comfortable accommodation in tea house/lodge during the trek, full board meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea & coffee) in during the trek.

Cost Exclusive: personal medical kit bag, personal trekking equipment, lunch and dinner in Kathmandu, Travel and rescue insurance, battery re-charged, tips for driver, guides and porters, hot shower, pot of tea or coffee. Personal expenses e.g. phone calls, laundry, bar bills & extra porters.

Ching, thanks for sharing. Awesome pics. You are very lucky to be still physically fit. Ya, enjoy life while you can. Visit places you wish to visit. Don't wait till you can't even walk to be sorry and regret.

Nowadays I seldom travel. No company. Friends not interested. So, I sit in front of my TV and indulge in virtual tours of countries I would love to visit.

Kudos to you. Enjoy your life!

  14. Thank you for these. The first 2 parts of your itinerary brings back memories, as I flew to Kathmandu from KL. But we just did a flight with Buddha Air that they called the "Everest Experience Flight" that leaves Kathmandu and fly's up and about Mt Everest. I then went and visited other parts of Nepal. All the best, Allan.

What a wonderful feat by your ownself! Really rejoice over your energized endeavor & generosity of sharing. However I do not intend just to rush through your photos now but to reserve some time later in order to have a feel of your journey of quest via photos or narratives.. this is something I would never be able to accomplish, not in this life time, irrespective of whether it is necessary or not.

Thanks for sharing. I always enjoy reading your detailed accounts of your travel. You sounded as if you would not trek in Nepal anymore. But, in my opinion, for your fitness you can still trek many more times. As for me, even though I'm not as fit as you and have trekked in Nepal 5 times, I still want to trek some more.
