It was truly in the spirit of Merdeka celebration that we took the Malaysian flag up to the top of Gunung Kutu on 10th Sep.2017. Gunung Kutu is a mountain near Kuala Kubu Bharu along the trunk road to Fraser's Hill. A total of 13 trekkers from the Malaysian Outward Bound Youth Association (MOBYA) took part in the climb - Andrew, Ching Neng Bin, Ching Jin Yuan, George Ling, Kalaiarasy, Leanne, Lim Ka Tin, Mohd Shahrul, Sitta, Song Poh, Tan Chwee Lan, Wei Wei and Yean Koon.

A moderately challenging hike and it took us almost 4 hours to trek to the peak inclusive of water and lunch break. At the top of Kutu, the rock summit offers 360-degree unobstructed view of the surrounding area and the Straits of Malacca on a clear day. Kutu was once used as British administration station to overlook Kuala Kubu Bahru in the 1900's, however, it was destroyed during the war.

The trek up Gunung Kutu normally takes about 3 to 4 hours depending on speed, begins from an Orang Asli village at the foothill; turn right at the signboard to Kampung Pertak after Sungai Selangor Dam, if coming from Kuala Kubu Bharu town. (L-R) Ching Jin Yuan, George Ling, Sitta, Andrew, Mohd Shahrul, Leanne, Wei Wei, Tan Chwee Lan, Lim Ka Tin, Kalaiarasy, Yean Koon, Song Poh. The photographer is Ching Neng Bin.

Starting coordinates: N3.572510, E101.738128. Starting height is 290m above sea level. Follow the paved road past modern-looking Aborigine homes as it winds along the Sungai Pertak River, where the road will connect to a gravel stretch to park cars. The entry fee is RM1 per person collected by the Orang Asli villages. The two Orang Asli dogs followed us 3/4 up the trek. A very smart dog which knows how to ask for food.

11.36am - At the big boulder of Gunung Kutu trail. Encountered huge overhanging rocks that provide excellent shelter against rain, with hiding places among the deep crevices and hollows, as well as loose slabs that make smooth beds.

A very unique plant in Gunung Kutu.

1.21pm - Entering a clearing here, where you see an aging chimney towers above the ground - this is the peak of Gunung Kutu. We took our lunch here before scramble up a nearby rocky summit.

Bombed by the Japanese during the war, it was eventually abandoned and was lost in thick vegetation. Today, the only remains of the bungalows that once overlooked the lush valley are a chimney, fireplace and well (that still collects water), and stone walls at the other end of the ridge.

There is a water well beside the Gunung Kutu chimney and surprising has plenty of clean water. We did bail the cool water out for washing our hands and face.

View of the 4th and 5th aluminum step-ladders on the Gunung Kutu rock summit. Might be a daunting experience to climb up the ladder for those with fear of height. Be very careful when moving around the boulders as there are no ropes or anything to support. Falling down from the boulder will cause unimaginable injury or even death.
